TONY GILROY is an industry veteran, until recently best known for scripting all three “Bourne” films and co-writing “Armageddon.” But in the award-season crush, he’s a rookie, especially as a director with his debut, “Michael Clayton,” earning honors from all sides. Actor, UN Advocate George Clooney Urges Greater Resources for Darfur Force
Jan 31, 2008 (UN News Service/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) — United Nations Messenger of Peace and award-winning actor George Clooney, just back from the war-wracked Darfur region of Sudan, today urged countries to provide peacekeepers serving with the hybrid United Nations-African Union force there enough resources to do their job - “or have the decency to just bring them all home.”

Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney is visiting the United Nations Thursday, in his new role as the world body’s messenger of peace.
A throng of enthusiastic female U.N. employees greeted the 46-year-old as he arrived at the New York headquarters for a tour and round of media interviews.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named Clooney to the post earlier this month for his efforts to bring attention to the suffering in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region. The actor recently returned from a trip to Sudan.
Clooney joins a number of other notable personalities as U.N. messengers of peace, chosen for their ability to focus public attention on critical international political and social issues.
The list includes actor Michael Douglas, Nobel Peace laureate Elie Wiesel, classical musician Yo-Yo Ma, British primatologist Jane Goodall, and Princess Haya of Jordan.US Film Star George Clooney Visits UN as New Messenger of Peace

Learning Curve Before making his directing debut with Clayton, Gilroy co-wrote the Bourne movies and worked “shoulder-to-shoulder” with Taylor Hackford on three films in an informal apprenticeship. “He couldn’t have been more inclusive,” Gilroy says. “I was involved in everything.” Who Needs Netflix? Clayton is heavily influenced by the 1970s-era movies that both Gilroy and star George Clooney love. For inspiration, “we watched Klute a lot,” says Gilroy. “And we screened two films we couldn’t get on DVD, The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Prince of the City.” Up Next In March, Gilroy is set to direct Julia Roberts and Clive Owen in the corporate thriller Duplicity, which he also wrote.

Cutting-Room Floor Clooney’s divorced “fixer” character originally had a girlfriend. “We shot it with Jennifer Ehleshe gave a wonderful performance,” says Clooney. “And the more we did it, we realized you have to isolate this character more. And having a girlfriend, he’s not in as much trouble.” Clooney wrote Ehle a note to apologize for the excision: “I didn’t cut it, but I still felt bad about it.” Up Next He stars in his third directorial effort, the football comedy Leatherheads (out April 4). He’s also wrapped the Coen brothers caper Burn After Reading with Brad Pitt and Clayton costar Tilda Swinton, and has lent his voice to Wes Anderson’s upcoming animated film The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

George Clooney said yesterday that his new role as a UNMessenger of Peace is one of his most difficult yet, especially because he wasn’t exactly allowed to deliver his message.
