GC TALKS DARFUR WITH PRIME MINISTER BROWN

Actor-turned-humanitarian GEORGE CLOONEY met with British Prime Minister GORDON BROWN on Tuesday (08Apr08) to discuss the Sudan genocide crisis.
The Oscar winner visited Brown’s official residence in London’s Downing Street in his capacity as a United Nations Messenger Of Peace, a post to which he was appointed in January (08).
Clooney, who talked to Brown ahead of the British premiere of his new movie Leatherheads, emerged from the meeting with the news a “wonderful suggestion” for buying peacekeeping helicopters had been made.
The actor/director then posed for pictures with Brown and his wife Sarah.
Brown said, “I am grateful for the leadership George Clooney has shown in drawing attention to this crisis - this is a humanitarian tragedy of colossal proportions and the world must take note and act.
“The U.K. is working with the international community and others to pressure all sides to agree a ceasefire and start peace talks.”
Clooney has become a leading celebrity advocate for action against genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan after filming a documentary about the ongoing violence and refugee crisis there last year (07).
He has also set up the Not On Our Watch organisation with his Ocean’s Thirteen castmates Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle - to help provide humanitarian aid in the region.

CLOONEY AND ZELLWEGER WOW CROWDS AT LONDON PREMIERE

George Clooney and Renee Zellweger were greeted by an excited London crowd at the European premiere of their new film Leatherheads on Tuesday night.

The former ER star and his leading lady appeared at the Leicester Square gala screening of their screwball comedy set in the world of 1920s American Football.

Leatherheads had been expected to debut at the top of the box office charts in the US but, after a disappointing opening weekend, had to settle for third spot after earning $13.5 million (£6.8 million) in its first three days on release, some $1.6 million (£806,000) less than gambling movie 21, which stayed at the top for a second week.

The film hits UK screens on Friday and at a press conference before the premiere, Clooney joked about his sex symbol status.

“What’s not to love?” he said. “How much time do we have? I think it’s really hair.”

Zellweger, 38, interjected: “It looks almost natural.”

Clooney - who has a ‘messenger of peace’ role with the United Nations - visited prime minister Gordon Brown earlier in the day to call for action in the wartorn region of Darfur.

Mr Brown agreed the situation is “unacceptable” and added “the world must take note and act”.

He also thanked Clooney for “the leadership [he] has shown in drawing attention to this crisis”.

Hollywood actor GEORGE CLOONEY embarrassed RENEE ZELLWEGER at the London premiere of their new movie LEATHERHEADS - by jokingly telling journalists she has a drink problem.
This week (begs07Apr08), Clooney has been spotted drinking with pals Thandie Newton and Jemima Khan during breaks from promoting his new movie in the British capital.
But the 46-year-old teased that it was Zellweger who has a problem with alcohol.
He jokes, “She has a huge drinking problem and is always falling over all of the time.”
And Clooney has some tips on how to avoid hangovers. He adds, “I have to keep drinking to get through - and then you don’t get a hangover. That’s what my parents told me.”
